I absolutely love listening to podcasts, especially in the car—it just naturally became my favorite routine. Whether I’m driving to and from the barn or embarking on longer road trips, I dive into a world of knowledge and laughter. These podcasts cover a fantastic range from educational gems to hilarious anecdotes, all centered around my cherished equine passion. Some offer invaluable training tips or cutting-edge medical research for horses. Others delve into the more controversial aspects of today’s competition scene. I eagerly consume both classical and modern methods, believing there’s a wealth of knowledge to be gained from each. Here’s an exciting breakdown of what each podcast offers, complete with links; just click on the title. And don’t worry—these gems are in no particular order, each one is a treasure trove and wealth of information!
1. Dressage Today Podcast– A training and educational resource mainly circling around the USDF. Aviva Nebesky a USDF L Judge and Stephanie Ruff a journalist span the world of dressage bringing training tips and top riders in interviews. Aviva has a segment called “Ask The L” where she answers the listeners questions regarding showing. Stephanie will travel to shows interviewing riders of all levels and bring those back to the show. A good informative podcast however they do get long winded at times.
2. Amelia Newcomb Dressage – Amelia is a trainer located in Temecula, California who has a huge social media following. Her philosophy is “dressage for all” and she means it. She has several online classes and webinars available through her Youtube, Facebook and Instagram channels. Her husband German (pronounced Herman) is also a trainer and together they do a Facebook live session every Thursday which they then use as their podcast the following day. She’s always fresh and up to date on what’s happening and answers questions very thoughtfully and honestly. Amelia knows her stuff. She’s trained several horses to Grand Prix including baby horses. It’s always refreshing to hear her and German talk dressage.
3. Straight From The Horse Doctor’s Mouth – Equine Veterinarian Dr. Erica Lacher and show host Justin Long discuss horse healthcare, and proper care and maintenance. It’s a pretty nerdy podcast so I scroll through the episodes to find something that’s relevant to me. They cover everything whether your horse is an athlete or a lawn ornament. New developments in supplements and feed are my favorite episodes.
4. The Poll – This is a podcast about horses and horse welfare. The hosts are two Danish equestrians, Sielja and Laura and they partner with experts and key voices in public debates surrounding horse welfare and the future of horse riding. They aim to broaden knowledge and understanding of equine biomechanics and behavior. They only have a couple of episodes in english currently but have been very popular in the Netherlands and the UK. I found them after the controversy around the dressage competition at the Paris Olympics hit the main stream of social media. It’s interesting to hear what competitors think who are either in or closer to the countries where a lot of the controversy in dressage training has happened. I don’t think they understood why Snoop Dogg was in Paris.
5. How To Dressage – A very British podcast that breaks down the How To’s of dressage. The goal is to help you train correctly, get higher scores, and win your next dressage competition. There hasn’t been a new episode since Jan 2024 but there are over 300 episodes available. Need instruction on how to ride a correct shoulder-in? There’s an episode just for that. Not only how to ride a shoulder-in is discussed but why riding should-in’s are important in dressage training. They also have training diaries and books available through Amazon.
6. The Dressage Radio Show – This is the official podcast of the United States Dressage Federation (USDF). They have over 700 episodes and are the longest running podcast about the world of dressage. Reese Kaufler Stanfield has been the longest running host since I started listening and she partners up with other co-hosts having conversations about the latest in dressage news. Reese does compete Grand Prix and also trains so she has those experiences to pull from. They interview all the US Equestrian and FEI riders and trainers including Adrienne Lyle and Steffan Peters to name a couple. It all seems a little staged and artificial at times. Reese can be very long winded and ramble on about nonsense stuff. I find myself fast forwarding quite often.
7. Mary Wanless Ride With Your Mind – Mary presents information on how the Ride With Your Mind approach to rider biomechanics can transform your learning, your riding, and possibly your life she says. Mary has been around a long time, over 40 years and has a wealth of information to share. She talks about her journey and illuminates key points with stories and metaphors. Her insight is many times derived from her sport psychology training. She will actually talk through exercises to help you with balance, feel, and lengthening of your own body to help you become a better rider. I can only listen to her in snippets because she wonders around a lot and her stories just aren’t that interesting at times.
8. Horse Training In Harmony – Karen Rohlf is another trainer with a huge following and online presence. She is the creator of the Dressage Naturally program for all levels of trainers and riders. She will actually train a trainer how to train! Karen’s goal is to give training advice to help you move up the levels without sacrificing your horse’s welfare and relationship. She gives her “outside the box” concepts and perspectives from top professionals. This show explores how to create stronger partnerships and develop healthy biomechanics, and will help you be your best for your horse and your life. Karen is exremely down to earth, open and honest about her horses and training principles. She’s the reason I say “Thank you” to Aldo after every ride.
